Triptych: Three Phases of Exhaustion
Materials: Photos taken and put into Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
Creation Process:
Taking my partners I was dating at the time, we went to places on campus and I took photos of them to create three different scenes to display the categories of exhaustion I was going through and were very familiar with. I took the photos, cut the pictures in illustrator and edited the pieces into pictures using photoshop. I also used photoshop to play with the opacities and colors to give it a very faded, old, time covered piece.
Message and Goal:
As someone who constantly struggles to talk about themself, I wanted to display what I was going through via art. Overworking has always been a problem of mine noticed by myself and friends. The sad part about it is that I am unfortunately not alone. Whether it be habit or just the state and environment people are in, many are also undergoing their own aspects and areas of overworking.
I created this piece when many students, including myself, were feeling the pains and stress of the increased workload and too much screen time influenced by COVID-19 on schools. And due to being human, workload and pressure comes from many other places besides just work.
School and jobs add to our mental overload while we also have our own lives to deal with. Many people work themselves to death physically by choice or by circumstance, and many have their own emotional baggage and shifts in their personal lives yet still have to keep existing whether they want to or not. Life is known to be difficult and often many people have settled for that or are told to just “suck it up.”or “that’s just how things are.” These pieces are showing the toll of that.
Physical work appears in our jobs as well as the chores we do at home and many work to the point they’re forced to rest. Mental drainage invades our lives and can be seen in moments as deceptively small as bringing our baggage and paperwork to places meant for rest and privacy. And emotional stress brings down oneself and can unfortunately negatively affect those around them.
This is a problem that everyone is constantly experiencing yet it’s extremely hard to tackle and hasn’t been treated.
